![]() Indeed, the characters serve different purposes, and figuring out how to use their unique talents to approach the cleverly designed platforming and puzzle sections results in a challenging, rewarding experience. You can also use a skill tree to upgrade them with new powers and improved abilities via the acquisition of skill points. The wizard can levitate and create objects the knight sports a sword, hammer, and shield and the thief uses a grappling hook in addition to her bow and arrows. Playing as three heroes – which you can switch between in an instant in single player – provides interesting scenarios for puzzle solving, platforming, and combat. Speaking of the gameplay, it’s enjoyable in various ways, but isn’t necessarily the highlight of the package. It matches the tone of the game with a full orchestra playing lively, upbeat, fun songs to accompany the gameplay, whether you're solving a puzzle or fighting a group of goblins. There’s nothing to complain about here, and the soundtrack has no downside either. Weapons make appropriate clashes, clangs, and pings in battle, and objects react to each other with realistic sounds. Environments have believable ambience with insects chirping and water flowing in the forest, and wind howling and thunder echoing through the craggy reefs of a stormy beach. To an extent, the same can be said for the sound effects and music, which also exhibit high quality and creativity. All in all, these things make it a visually striking and awe-inspiring title that few other competitors in its category achieve. In other words, despite the fact that you can only go left and right, there is a sense of depth, openness, and dimension to the levels and environments that brings them to life. Trine 2 addresses this problem with backgrounds that showcase mountainous ranges, cascading waterfalls, and dark hallways that look as if you could run towards them. Most platformer games focus on remaining fairly 2D in perspective and ignore reality in terms of how bizarre their levels would look if they were presented from a different view. Each area looks interesting, and this is especially true with the backdrops and implementation of the 3D graphics. This is further bolstered by its immaculate, varied environmental design and scope, which exceeds that of your average puzzle platforming game. Running at a smooth 60 frames-per-second in 1080p resolution, the game is incredibly breathtaking to behold with its excellent lighting, rich colours, and sharp textures. For a 2011 game, you may expect this version on the PlayStation 4 to be a minor upgrade compared to its past iterations, but this assumption is erroneous. ![]() But where did these things come from and why? That is up to the heroes to solve, and it will take them on an expedition of epic proportions. These characters, with their varying skills and personalities, must answer any call to action that the Trine gives them, and one night they’re summoned out of the blue once more to investigate a nearby forest, rampant with goblins and mysterious water with magical properties. The trio consists of Amadeus the wizard, Pontius the knight, and Zoya the thief. Our story begins with a cheerful narrator describing a group of three heroes bound together by a mysterious artifact called the Trine. However, does the game fall victim to a lack of inspiration, or is it a fun journey with sublime qualities? Trine 2: Complete Story attempts to invoke these feelings with its colourful, detailed graphics, platforming and puzzle-solving gameplay, and a simple story based on classic fantasy lore. ![]() For some reason, fairy tales have this strange ability to captivate the minds of not just children, but adults as well, because they bring out feelings of wonder and longing for adventure. How would you sum up a typical children’s fantasy story? Perhaps words like whimsical, imaginative, and magical come to mind.

Electric pianos (especially R2, for my taste) are also illusion, like clavinets, excellent. If I have not mentioned here that the model D4, U4, recently acquired, is also phenomenal as upright piano. Note that I only compare here the sound, the choice of a keyboard "all in one" or "master keyboard + computer" does not come into consideration, convenience fit for the purposes of course depends on the individual. As for the marriage with a more electronic environment, too, brings the Pianoteq own living next to the "real" instruments. Although the two musical contexts are different (against Soul jazz / classical), but to choose, especially when it comes to marry a virtual piano with real acoustic elements, the Pianoteq is needed undoubtedly. To complete the proof by experience no comparison between the two in studio version: The registered last year on a project NS2 Soul sounds nonetheless digital, where Pianoteq recently placed on the soundtrack of a short film is completely illusion. In short, once all the settings adjusted to my way, I get a sound quality and playability well above the Pianoteq, despite the recognized qualities of excellent NS2. And there is the great advantage of the latter, since everything is adjustable, the length of the string to the position of striking point and volume of hammers, as the resonance of the soundboard, much better on the plugin. Realism that I could find on Pianoteq, including through Damper settings and positioning of microphones. I still tried to get "closer" to the NS2 several levels being used on some concerts practicing Yamaha C3/C7 or Steinway Model D, with quite reactive dampers, I particularly like the ability to disable the long release of NS2, which I think brings a lot of realism and sound game (others say the same thing "with" !). However, taking the time to compare two equal volumes ( NS2 Steinway D Close Pianoteq against D4 Jazz AB without reverb), I finally looked for Pianoteq. It always takes time to adjust when going from a very clean Pianoteq sampled piano because the sound, the atmosphere can be confusing in this regard. Purchased from the first version via the group buy launch, I come back happily on Pianoteq 4.5, after a break of 18 months hardware via the Nord Stage 2 for live AND studio. ![]() ITubeGo is a useful app that lets you download all the audiovisual content you want from the most popular social networks like Instagram, YouTube, or Twitter, along with others such as Dailymotion and Vimeo. At first the restaurant was simply added to my to-try list, but it quickly leapfrogged to the top because of the volume of recommendations.Ī lot of its popularity has to do with the accessible, affordable nature of Chinese dim sum, in which multiple dumpling and other pupu- or tapas-size selections are made available for a few dollars apiece. ![]() Usually the appearance of a new restaurant is followed by a handful of, “Have you been there?” queries, but none to the extent of those insisting I get over to Yung Yee Kee Dim Sum restaurant. ![]() Pre-marking on the Solvy makes portable stitching super easy. ![]() Or, you can do what I did, and use a water-soluble marker (or something similar – don’t use a Sharpie!) to pre-mark the design, so that I didn’t have to refer to a chart while actually stitching. Then you just work your cross stitch on the grid, using the dots or the intersections on the grid as your stitch placement guide. I like to print a dotted grid (I’ve included a PDF printable for this particular dotted grid below), rather than a full-line grid, but you can do either. So, using Sticky Fabri-Solvy for cross stitch is not really much different from using it for surface embroidery, except that, instead of printing a design, you just print your grid. They do have some drawbacks – and you certainly wouldn’t use them on any kind of embroidery that you couldn’t wash! – but this type of printable, water-soluble stabilizer is terrific for projects on washable household items, like flour sack towels and the like. They supply an easy way to print a design and get it onto your fabric, to start stitching right away. Mostly, Transfer-Eze and Sticky Fabri-Solvy are used in the hand embroidery world for surface embroidery. It comes in printer-sized sheets (12 to a package), and it’s very easy to use.Īlthough I haven’t written an article devoted solely to Fabri-Solvy, I’ve written a tutorial and review about Transfer-eze, which came out before Fabri-Solvy, and which is exactly the same concept. It’s called Sticky Fabri-Solvy, and it’s a printable, stick-on, water-soluble stabilizer. It involves another product, and you might even have some on hand. A Third Option for Cross Stitching on Plain Weave Fabric Soluble canvas by DMC is a plastic sheet with evenly spaced holes in it, and you stitch into those holes. Waste canvas is a stiffish, open-weave fabric that you stitch over, and then you pull the threads of the canvas out from underneath your stitches. The first two options I mentioned were waste canvas and soluble canvas. There’s no grid on plain weave fabric, so you have to supply a grid, if you want decent looking cross stitches. Remember, plain weave fabric is any fabric that isn’t an even-weave fabric like the kind you’d normally use for counted work. In that article, we chatted about three ways that you can work cross stitch – or any counted technique, really – on plain weave fabric, but I didn’t clarify the third way you could do it, because I hadn’t finished my little stitchy projects to test it out.īut now I’ve finished them, so here we go!Īll three methods involve some sort of something that supplies a grid for the plain weave fabric. On Monday, I shared with you a pattern for cross-stitched snowflakes of a folky sort, that can be used to embellish table linens, ornaments, and whatnot for the holiday season. ![]() Why? I appreciate the complexity. Wow, this is the most complex game i ever see in this site.Tl dr: It's worth playing with cheats, but the grinding and RNG really kills the fun. I know a lot of work has gone into this, which makes me all the more sad to say it, but this game would take some serious overhaul to make it worthwhile. In summary, it's one of those games that have a fantastic premise and are ambitious in scope but sadly fumble all the central points of the execution. The characters are trope-y, their design ranging from decent to uncanny valley to straight-up terrible, accessing most scenes is a chore and the full scenes themselves come in two variations (for the full sex-scene) which are okay but short and always follow the same three-stage pattern. The sad thing is, however, that they decidedly do not. Now, that kind of grind would be okay-ish (after all, making a genuinely good game is a challenge and the focus could simply be elsewhere), if the rewards made up for it. The grinding is bad - not as mindnumbing as other reviewers may make your think but it is not exactly fun because this game is very sparing with scene variation, meaning that if you've seen a grind scene once, you've basically seen them all, so have fun clicking through that one again over and over as you go through the hour-long routine of building up some stats, cash, and relationships. ![]() You can spend real money to buy Golden Bucks, but quite honestly, that seems like a real waste and it kills part of the fun of playing through the game. Thankfully, WWE 2K Battlegrounds takes this approach, and thus it makes the build up of XP and Golden Bucks less of a grind, and anything but predatory. It seems like this started with MLB The Show a few years ago. Many sports games are rewarding players for simply playing any aspect of their titles. It’s a slightly different approach to create-a-wrestler, and I like some of it. There is a mode designed specifically for leveling up created wrestlers, which is likely why it’s not a part of the campaign. I found myself caring a little more about the wrestler I created. This creation suite doesn’t serve the purpose as the same feature does in most wrestling games, and that’s OK. You have to progress your character through playing the game, which adds more longevity to it on a whole. ![]() The options aren’t as deep here as they are in the core WWE 2K series, but I love the fact that you’re not able to simply max out all the ratings and special abilities. I think this is an approach other sports games should take in an effort to expand the type of stories they can tell and convey while also saving some resources during development.Ī New Challenging Spin on Create-a-Wrestler I like the visual presentation of the campaign mode as they substitute cinematic screens for comic book pages to tell the story. Rather than giving you an option to play through a journey with your created wrestler, the campaign mode introduces fictional characters, which you unlock for the roster, as you are tasked with moving your way through a flow-chart of events that lead to the end of the mode. There are some missing pieces to the roster, which I’ll get into shortly, but it’s most of the wrestlers you’d hope to have the ability to use in a WWE game. There are currently 70 wrestlers to choose from, though some of them have to be unlocked. You can also play tournaments online, which could lend itself to some fun for gamers who aren’t able to take advantage of couch play options. You’re dropped in the midst of a four-person brawl and you gain XP rewards and other goodies for eliminating players and simply remaining in the ring. The King of the Battleground is essentially an online Royal Rumble that never stops. The online options are arguably just as strong. The other match types are solid as well, and it’s possible you’ll find your own gem in the options which also include: traditional singles and tag-team, tornado tag-team, Triple-Threat, Fatal Four-Way, and Gauntlet. ![]() It’s a pick-up-and-play experience that drew some funny outbursts from my son and I as he helped me evaluate the game from a couch play standpoint. Again, the gameplay component here doesn’t require deep understanding. Essentially, you have to incapacitate your opponent long enough for you to fill your money meter, which then unlocks the ability to escape the cage. The Money-In-The-Bank-like incorporation was a smart way to make users earn the ability to exit the cage. The Steel Cage matches were the most fun for me during this evaluation. ![]() This too has some button-mashing, but it’s quick and the on-screen prompt is easy to follow. The Royal Rumble is similar to a Gauntlet Match–which is also in the game–but to eliminate opponents you have to toss them over the top rope. I like WWE 2K BG’s take on the Royal Rumble and Steel Cage bouts the most of any of the match types in the game. There are several fun offline components. WWE 2K BG finds a sweet spot in this way. Some people hate this approach to gameplay, but there is a happy medium between the old school Track and Field games and something that doesn’t use button mashing at all. The grappling moves are easy to initiate, a little tougher to block–which is fine–and the button-mashing aspects are excessive. ![]() $2000 and $2400 are the hexadecimal base addresses in video memory of the two tilemaps.Ī specially modified emulator could watch for writes to the scroll register and log newly revealed areas of the map. The Nintendo Entertainment System has 2 KiB of video memory in the Control Deck. There are two ways to do this: one generic and one game-specific. The emulator will need to be able to handle game maps of differing sizes, as well as expecting to give the game more resources. Would you expect them to be moving the entire time, or only when the active portion of the screen reaches them? The former affects the gameplay of various games, while the latter would require additional logic that currently doesn't exist inside the game code.Įven if you modified the game code, an emulator isn't going to be able to handle it unless you modify the emulator as well. There are also a lot of other problems with this - I know that in SMB1, enemies that are off-screen don't move. This means that there's no reason to expect an emulator to know how to take a particular game and render the full map for the current level. It's very likely that over time they figured out better ways to do it, so even in similar games (SMB1 vs SMB3) the maps would be stored in memory differently. Rendering an entire level when only a small part would be displayed would have been a huge waste of precious computing resources.Īlso, there's no reason to assume that every single NES game coded its map the same way. ![]() They didn't have gigabytes (or even megabytes) to spare of either storage or RAM.
